THE MEETING BETWEEN MUSSOLINI AND FRANCISCO FRANCO

Benito Mussolini meets Caudillo Francisco Franco, along with the foreign minister and his brother-in-law, Serrano Sufier in Bordighera, in the villa of the Queen of Italy, 11 February 1941, conflict in the world. In the interview Mussolini tried in vain to convince the Caudillo to intervene in the Asse side in the war against England. A Spanish intervention in the crisis would put the British fleet and, with the closure of the Strait of Gibraltar, would have caused a serious blow to the device in the Mediterranean strategically English. But the dictator gave evasive answers and certainly refused to engage in a conflict full of unknowns. Probably the same Mussolini was not very convinced of that and, shortly before leaving for Bordighera, seems to have called the summit "unnecessary" and would have also said: "How can I convince to go to war a country with reserves of bread for a single day? ".
